Evolving the Liverpool Civic Centre Library Façade
Session summary
The library is a component of the Liverpool Civic Place development in Liverpool, Sydney, a stand-alone building in-the-round, of 4 storeys above ground and two below. The above ground portion was envisaged as an all-glass monolith to facilitate strong visual connections between the library interiors and the surrounding plaza. As a consequence, the energy requirements are onerous. To achieve high solar performance the glazing trade-off was a lower light transmission - too low to preserve the visual connection concept. To overcome this a circular view zone with reduced performance and enhanced transmission was proposed, and an extensive R&D exercise exploring a variety of solutions for sun strike and glare control ensued. The result is a unique triple/double glazed system approach with cooperative graphic frits and a sun-tracking automated screen-printed blind. The panel will discuss the initial studies and the development and prototyping of the glazing adopted. John Perry
